WHAT'DYA KNOW?

I'm in a good mood. It's Saturday and I don't have to work. I can sit here and write "to do" lists of things that I don't do. But they make me feel better seeing all that stuff captured on paper.

Bush's people sent me an e-mail to reply with for my confirmation to send him an e-mail. I wonder what's next?

I asked my brother to pray for me to find a new career. I've been blessed in my life in that area until the last three years. For many years, maybe fifteen, I had jobs that I actually looked forward to going to. I wanted to get up in the morning. I didn't care how long I stayed if I had things I had to do. I never watched the clock. Time went by too fast. I was totally involved.

Really I had careers, not jobs. My undergraduate degree is in English with no specialization in teaching. I was fortunate enough to get a job right after graduation with a magazine as an associate editor. Later I became fiction and poetry editor. I loved this job, but I loved working with the free-lance writers so much that I decided I wanted to switch careers and go into the social services.

I began a MS in Counseling/Psych and soon became a certified substance abuse counselor. I did this for many years, working in private hospitals; large residential, not-for-profit facilities, and outpatient clinics. I have many stories about these years. I used to tell my small children, "Don't lie to me because I get lied to for a living." Because it's true that the only time alcoholics/addicts, caught up in denial and not wanting to quit, lie is when they move their lips. I'll share some of the wilder ones some day. Here's one I like: A man is about to go on his honeymoon. He has been married maybe two days. He is out of cocaine. His wife is as sweet and unsuspecting as you can't imagine, given what he is like. He goes to score, and the drug being what it is, finds that he is gone a little longer than he anticipated--like a few days longer. He hasn't called home, and it's past the time they were supposed to leave on the big honeymoon. What does he do? Why, he has a friend lock him in the trunk of his BMW. Then the friend calls the wife, and says he found so-and-so's car in a kind of bad neighborhood. She might want to come and get it.

Of course the wife is very worried and comes running. All her anger is dissipated I'm sure. It's time for "Oh My God, Please, No," instead of "I will kill him. After this shortest marriage on record, I will kill him." So she goes, hear muffled noises from the trunk and believes his bullshit story until he is in treatment months and months later, and finally tells her the truth. She really was that innocent.

There's many more where that came from. Unfortunately, they all sound as far-fetched and unbelievable as that one, but, in fact, truth is stranger than fiction in that world.

I burned out on being lied to day and night. I read an article in the paper that the City of Chicago was offering a program to attract talented people with bachelor degrees who were willing to teach in challenging inner city schools in exchange for tuition-free master's program in education at really prestigious local schools. I was one of the 100 out of 1,000 who were "lucky" enough to be selected. Little did I know what a dark day that was.

I figured that after working with giant hulks of gang-bangers as a therapist, what was there to fear in high school students? Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. There was everything to fear. They sent me to an alternative school--alternative to jail, I believe. It was one of the very worst experiences of my life. I will save that story for posts all to themselves. They, too, are unbelievable but true and need the proper foundation. Suffice it to say I will never teach again.

So today my brother, a very smart man, sends me this link and it's something I really can see myself doing. The link he sent me is the Association of Independent Information Professionals. How perfect. I never want to leave my computer's side, and I love researching. Wouldn't it be great to actually get paid for what I love to do? I can see specializing in, say, medical research, because I know a lot of terminology, and I find it fascinating. So that may be the end of my temporary McJob that I took after my little nervous breakdown or whatever you want to call it from teaching. I just needed something low profile and no stress. I found it washing dishes at the zoo.

All of this reminded me of a couple of resources you might like to know about. You can get them e-mailed to you. One that I really like because you never know what you're going to get is Research Buzz, news and information about search engines and databases. This month's offerings include links to a subject index of history resources, a database of science fiction books and authors, a searchable subject index for reading mysteries, and a grant explorer with 680,000 grants. Another huge resource is Gary Price's Resource Shelf which has lists of tools, directories, web resources, digital library resources, full-text documents, health information, reports and on and on. Whatever you want is there somewhere if you can only find it. You can sign up to be on the mailing list. You will then receive small sets of additions to the list. If you collect information like I do, you have to have this one.

Finally, here's a little present from my taskbar to yours. It's a Reference Desk, and it doesn't miss anything I can think of. Though I must say I was disappointed that the computer glossary did not include the term eplpdx02. But it has a whole lot.

I'm off to dinner and the movies and guess who's taking me? My 17-year-old daughter! On a Saturday night! Do I have a terminal illness no one has told me about? Is she planning to move to Europe? What could it be? I'll just go and enjoy. Hope you have a good one too.

NOW HE'S CENSORING OUR E-MAILS

Nine Web pages and a detailed form, complete with provided lists of categories of acceptable subject topics, will now keep Bush from even reading e-mails that disagree with his party rule--one of the key questions being, "Do you support White House policy?"

For some crazy reason every encroaching sign of his dictatorship in our former democracy continues to amaze me. I was actually shocked when I read this in today's New York Times. His people have the audacity to try to camouflage this new e-mail system as "an effort to be more responsive to the public and offer the administration 'real time' access to citizen comments. (Just like the other fiasco to be responsive to regular folks: the 30-minute online forum. Edgy, timely, straight from the hip guests like the White House photographer, showing his photos of King George frolicking on the grounds with cherubic children. What? Me worry?)

The article quotes Jimmy Orr, the White House Internet news director, who describes the system as an enhancement. He says you can inquire about policy issues and expect a personalized response in 24 to 48 hours.

So we'll just see. The proof is in the pudding, Grandma always said. I am willing to give this "user-friendly" bullshit a shot and send him an e-mail and see what happens. I will, of course, have to check any box that indicates that no, I don't support White House policy. Of course, they don't say WHAT response to expect. I may not get a return e-mail. I may just get more notes next to my name on their lists of suspected traitors or whatever it is that they've been keeping since Patriot Act.

I am going to ask the Fuhrer an honest question about why he is saying that he will veto any appropriations bill with FCC limitations. I will explain to him that over two million people have demonstrated that they want a diverse media. ( And to take it to where he might give a flying fig); doesn't this bipartisan support reflect an issue that could cost him in the election? Why is he against a diverse media? Isn't that part of living in a democracy?

I'll let you know what it's like and what happens. Or, you can try it yourself: Here's where the long and winding road begins: We're off to see the Wizard

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got back from seeing the wizard. One of the first questions is whether I agree or disagree with Bush's policies. Of course, I had to put disagree, which probably earns me an instant delete. We'll see. Here's the e-mail I sent:

Dear President Bush, (That part is a form so you can't let your imagination and creative talents go wild, I'm afraid.)

I want to ask you why you say that you would veto any appropriations bill with any FCC limitation amendments if one reached your desk. As a representative of the American people, doesn't it make a difference that more than two million people have demonstrated in some fashion that they want a diverse media? Isn't that part of living in a democracy? Caring about what the people want AND having a diverse media?

Besides, this bipartisan issue could come back to get you in the election. Do you care about that?

What I care about is allowing my children to listen to free radio, not pablum. I care about letting my children see a wide range of television programming, not just what a handful of white men deem suitable for them.

Sincerely,

MsRefusnik (I did sign my real name and even address)

Okay, now we wait and see)

From USA Today
Vegas 'Bambi hunt' spurs outrage
Women's-rights groups and others are expressing outrage over a Las Vegas
company's "Hunting for Bambi" game, which supposedly charges men up to
$10,000 to hunt down and shoot nude women with paintball guns. KLAS-TV
aired footage of women wearing nothing but sneakers, running through
sagebrush to avoid being shot by 200-mph paint pellets. Founder David
Krekelberg denies that the game is a publicity stunt to sell videos on his
Web site. But by late Wednesday, the game's site had been removed.

From City Councilman Michael Mack of Las Vegas:
Thank you for your email. It was recently brought to the attention of the
city of Las Vegas that an illegal paintball business that involves young
women may be operating out of our city. The city of Las Vegas Business
Licensing Division is investigating the matter. The city of Las Vegas does
not tolerate any illegal businesses operating in the city limits.

Thank you for your email and concern on this matter.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Subject: STOP THIS PUBLIC HATE CRIME

Dear Mayor Montandon and Council Members,
We demand an end to this outrageous example of hatred of women. Hunting for
Bambi 'games' promote hate, revenge, and violence toward all human females.
Michael Burdick's business Hunting for Bambi advertises that men can
"actually hunt one of our Bambi sluts and shoot her with paintballs while
we film the whole thing and tape it for your own home video." They note
that "With over 30 women ready to be chased down and shot like dogs we
guarantee a wide variety of Bambi's to choose from. Whether it is a fat ass
cow or a perfect 10 we have an abundance of these beauties." The web site
offers free images and claims the injured women as: "Liars, Cheaters and
Whore Bags" Photo Gallery. Every single "Bitch" got what she deserved!"
This is NO sport, it is about encouraging violence to women, which is clear
by Burdick's invitation to "come out to our ranch and shoot one of these
nagging whinny bitches where it hurts and shut her the f[...] up. Then
mount her like a "Real Man"."

This is not some frightening white supremacist, militia cult hiding in the
desert where women are abused. This is a thriving business in your city,
advertised with a two-part special on your own local news. But the news did
not say that the price of $10,000 includes not only airfare but rape:
"Mount (not for virgins, you figure it out)." We can't imagine that even
laws as radical as Las Vegas's prostitution laws allow for this kind of
business.

Please look into this immediately and make it clear that this kind of thing
is not what Las Vegas is about. The men who pay thousands of dollars to
come to your city to legally hunt and rape your women are not the kind of
consumers from whose money your city wishes to benefit.

We have come a long way in the struggle to stop violence and degradation
toward women. Don't let the world think that Las Vegas is on the cutting
edge of promoting it.

Please let us know what your city officials plan to do about this.
Sincerely, YOUR NAME

Here's an article with more details in case you're been sleeping it off or in a state of nirvana for a couple of days. Michael Burdick, the founder of HuntingForBambi, knows his clientele. He says, "the majority of the men...who play the game are the submissive, quite type. For the individual who's used to saying 'I can't go out with the boys tonight' or the wimp of America, it's a chance for him to come out and vent his aggression and really take charge and have some fun."

This article also quotes Marv Glovinsky, a clinical psychologist, who says that this so-called game mixes violence with sexuality and can be dangerous for men who can not distinguish fantasy from reality, and acting out the violence in this game could lead to them acting out real violence."

Finally, here is the ad to get these dickless Walter Mittys to book a hunt.

I don't want to seem strident all the damn time, but it's always something, isn't it? I did a hell of a lot of protesting and consciousness raising and letter writing and campaigning so that today's young woman would know better than this, but so it goes. Bob Dylan said it: "Money doesn't talk, it swears." They're young now, but some day $1,000 as the price for their self-respect won't seem like much. And they ARE the victims.

So it's time to write more e-mails (See above.) I am disgusted and sickened that the 2003 man thinks he can get away with this without protest. I hope we prove him wrong.

MORE REBUKES TO REPUBLICANS/BUSH ON FCC

And, we the people, are dialing it in. Yesterday the House Appropriations Committee approved a budget amendment that would make it more difficult for the few big broadcasting companies to eat up more television stations. This was considered a defeat not only for Michael Powell, FCC chairman, " but it was also a REBUKE (love that word) to the Republican House leadership and the Bush administration, strong supporters of the commission's efforts," according to the New York Times.

It's working. The telephone calls, e-mails, letters... it's working. MoveOn reports that last week's phone campaign brought in 17 new co-sponsors of FCC rollback legislation in the House, and five new co-sponsors in the Senate. MoveOn writes in their e-mail, "It reminded legislators that we are watching what they do, and that we're not going away." And that included Representtive Billy Tauzin, Rep. of Louisiana and Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, among the most vocal of the opposition, and the person whose office receptionist rudely hung up on me when I was just calmly talking about the issues.

But Bush is nervous when it looks like he might not get his way. White House spokeswoman, Claire Buchan, said last night that the "president's senior advisers would recommend a veto" if a bill including the amendment ultimately reached his desk."

Now we must continue to fight one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington. MoveOn says, "Thanks for being part of the biggest media reform movement our country's seen in decades." FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein estimates that nearly 2 million Americans have gotten involved in this.

Please read about all the additional co-sponsors both bills picked up. For more information go to Media Reform or Common Cause.

MORE REASONS NOT TO SLEEP AT NIGHT.

I've mentioned that some are led to this weblog by search keywords and phrases like "I keep having to change my screen name because he searches the sites I go to," and "lapdancers," to name two. Recently added are Graves Disease, never mentioned in this blog, and mail contact of widows in America, that's right m-a-i-l, again nothing about widows, some mention made of mail and America I guess. Oh, and don't let me forget "a poem about dirty dishes in the sink," which sort of made sense because I did say I read from The Outlaw Book of American Poetry while waiting for more dirty dishes.

And now I have found the motherlode. It's Disturbing Search Requests. I accidentlly came across it. Some of the highlights of other people's actual searches include: the weather channel's greatest hits, Ann Coulter is a crazy, Nazi liar; homeless people used for lawn care (makes sense to me), and Bob Keeshan naked (Mr. Green Jeans, put on those pants.)

It's a shame to say that the great majority of the "disturbing search terms" are just repugnant and disgusting, and your typical porno stuff. Searchers are lacking in imagination if you ask me. At any rate, now I know where to submit some of my keywords.
