MORE REBUKES TO REPUBLICANS/BUSH ON FCC

And, we the people, are dialing it in. Yesterday the House Appropriations Committee approved a budget amendment that would make it more difficult for the few big broadcasting companies to eat up more television stations. This was considered a defeat not only for Michael Powell, FCC chairman, " but it was also a REBUKE (love that word) to the Republican House leadership and the Bush administration, strong supporters of the commission's efforts," according to the New York Times.

It's working. The telephone calls, e-mails, letters... it's working. MoveOn reports that last week's phone campaign brought in 17 new co-sponsors of FCC rollback legislation in the House, and five new co-sponsors in the Senate. MoveOn writes in their e-mail, "It reminded legislators that we are watching what they do, and that we're not going away." And that included Representtive Billy Tauzin, Rep. of Louisiana and Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, among the most vocal of the opposition, and the person whose office receptionist rudely hung up on me when I was just calmly talking about the issues.

But Bush is nervous when it looks like he might not get his way. White House spokeswoman, Claire Buchan, said last night that the "president's senior advisers would recommend a veto" if a bill including the amendment ultimately reached his desk."

Now we must continue to fight one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington. MoveOn says, "Thanks for being part of the biggest media reform movement our country's seen in decades." FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein estimates that nearly 2 million Americans have gotten involved in this.

Please read about all the additional co-sponsors both bills picked up. For more information go to Media Reform or Common Cause.
